Project Based Learning Approach to Civics Engagement Series
Series Overview: Research in civics education refers to instructional strategies that promote democratic ways of thinking that foster informed and active citizenship. It also establishes that citizenship education should be student-centered with a strong emphasis on classroom discussion and cooperative activities.
One approach that increases student interaction and enables students to engage with relevant issues is Project Based Learning (PBL). In this four-part series, the LAC will introduce participants to the PBL approach to develop relevant civics curricula. We will look at real issues our students face and develop tools for self-advocacy. Throughout the series, we will include lesson ideas that can be used with students at varying levels of proficiency. We will also explore how specific technology tools can be integrated into civics instruction. Finally, coaching sessions will be offered to participants to assist them in building their projects.
Attendance Restrictions: Attendees must commit to attending all four days of the series.
Sessions: February 8th, February 15th, March 8th, and April 26th
Audience: ESOL, ABE, and Pre-HSE Instructors
Facilitators: Nell Eckersley and Lizelena Iglesias
Session 1: The Nuts and Bolts of Project Based Learning
Description: During the first session of this series, teachers will learn how to design and execute thematic learning projects that enhance academic skills and promote civics engagement. Participants will be introduced to the seven common phases of Project Based Learning: 1) Identifying a topic, problem, or issue for examination, 2) Sharing prior knowledge and experience, 3) Planning and assigning tasks, 4) Researching the topic or issue, 5) Conceptualizing the product, 6) Creating and presenting the product, and 7) Evaluating the project and assessing learning. Participants will learn how to align projects to skill-based and content-based learning objectives and will review examples. Participants will walk away with an outline of a project that will incorporate PBL essential elements and student civic action.
